The Horse Junkies community was hit hard this week with the loss of one of its beloved members, Sugar, better known simply as “Sug” to those of us followed her adventures and loved her. You didn’t need to have ever met her live and “in horse” to know that she was a beautiful, sweet, spirited mare with a wonderful sense of humor and a talented writing ability! My mare Sandie corresponded with her through a series of blog letters here on Horse Junkies, and the two had certainly become special pen pal buddies!
It’s always hard to lose a member of your family, and our horses definitely fit into that category if you ask any of us Junkies. And not just Amy Vodraska’s family, but the extended family that is Horse Junkies United will miss Sug. I know that many of us Junkies have felt the loss right alongside Amy, having looked forward to Sug’s blogs and any of Amy’s blogs that included that courageous mare in them!
But as hard as it is to lose Sug, especially unexpectedly and too soon, I think we ALL know she’s still with us in spirit, and running free across rolling green fields. Sandie and I are absolutely sure of it. Our first blue ribbon of the year was dedicated yesterday to Sugar…we had our best dressage test in MANY years, scoring a 29.5…coincidence? I don’t think so, I don’t believe in those! If you ask me, Sugar was out there galloping the cross country course alongside us, egging her buddy Sandie on…I have never seen Sandie attack the cross country jumps with such courage and gusto!
She even went cross-country schooling for the first time a week ago
Amy, I know this is hard, there is nothing easy about losing such a great partner and friend. But she’s still with you… every time the wind blows through the trees on an otherwise still morning, it’s her telling you it’ll be alright. Every time you take in a breathtaking sunset, you’ll feel her presence. Little signs will start to appear everywhere, and I hope you will find them and find peace in knowing she left them there for you.
And have faith that you’ll be with her again someday… because it’s never goodbye, it’s only so long for now…
From all of us at Horse Junkies United and Sugar’s MANY fans, our deepest condolences…run free, sweet Sug…and know you are truly loved.
