“All right listen! I didn’t want to do this, but you gave me no choice. Here comes the smolder.” – Flynn Rider, Tangled
I once told my high school crush that he reminded me of my horse. I thought it was the single greatest compliment I could give a male biped. To him it probably solidified the fact that I was nuts, if the slobber stains on my shirt and hay in my hair hadn’t already given me away.
No top model or crush compares to “the smolder” our horses give us.
You know the look.
You’ve probably photographed it a million times- ears perked forward, eyes bright in anticipation. It’s the same look that makes a terrible day a bit better and the look that makes us forgive them for deliberately dumping us at fence three (I mean 99.9% of the time it’s the rider’s fault anyway).
We may think that we have trained them, but the truth is – they have trained us.
“The human comes this way! Perk ears and wag head a bit. Yes! Oh! A treat for me? If you insist.”
The best is when they add in a nicker.
“Oh here she is – remember what we practiced, gang. I’ll start with a whinny and y’all nicker in three-part harmony.”
It doesn’t matter if they are 7 or 27, shaggy, swaybacked or muscular. To a horse lover, each soft nicker or excited expression makes our hearts melt, and we fall in love all over again.
